In this role, the College is seeking an experienced Creative Director responsible for leading the artistic and design direction for Hillsdale College marketing activities and materials (print, digital, video). The Creative Director will help to implement the institution’s strategic and creative effort to share the College’s mission with audiences around the country through directing an in-house creative services team. The Creative Director guides all creative, branding, and marketing projects and is responsible for the overall quality of work produced by the creative team and marketing department.

    Job Summary

    As an integral member of the marketing leadership team, the Creative Director reports to the Vice President of Marketing. This person will help to radiate the activity of the College (the mission of the College) to audiences across the country through strategic and creative content that inspires action. Specifically, the Creative Director will drive leadership and oversight for the College’s creative output through multiple mediums, platforms, and properties and manage a core team within the Office of the Vice President for Marketing that also includes student interns and outside partners for additional support.




    Creative Management

    • Leads, manages, and supervises a creative team and partners, responsible for the development, design, and production of creative services, collateral, digital, and video for a wide range of mediums, platforms, and properties.
    • Provides creative direction, vision, and inspiration for the entire creative services team within the Marketing Department and outside partners, as well as implementation of creative project execution across the College.
    • Helps shape the creative vision and user experiences and ensures quality and consistency of design among creative teams in programs and departments across the College.
    • Proactively leads projects from concept to completion across print, digital, and video while developing staff, producing against multiple deadlines and initiatives, and creating and maintaining productive work processes and controls.
    • Ensures that all creative execution for the College supports the institution’s strategic goals and brand identity.
    • Ensures consistency by upholding the institution’s brand style guide, communicating this widely to multiple stakeholders, both internal and external.
    • Assists in organizing and managing a departmental workload and reinforces a project traffic process, which includes print, digital, and video, to ensure a timely workflow and efficient use of resources.
    • Helps to lead the creation and direction of presentations, demonstrations, and prototypes that establish brand narratives and experiences for internal and external audiences.
    • Continues hands-on work for the creation and development of a portfolio of projects on behalf of the College.
    • Fosters relationships across campus to instill partnership, design integrity, and the promotion of creative brand consistency and shared resources.


    Team Management

    • Build and supervise a small but powerful in-house creative team, including support from outside agency partners and student interns.
    • Establish priorities and manage workflow for creative teams.
    • Provide on-going coaching and mentoring to creative teams.
    • Foster a team-oriented, results-driven environment.


    Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Perspective


    Here is our top-ten list:

    1. An undergraduate degree required. An advanced degree or comparable certification, training, or educational life experience is a plus.
    2. Bringing over seven years of creative leadership and design experience for print, digital and video work is highly desired.
    3. Experience working on higher education projects (print, digital, video) and familiarity with the higher education culture is a bonus.
    4. Demonstrated success in managing creative teams and projects is a given.
    5. Ability to handle multiple deadlines and a little creative chaos goes without saying.
    6. Great listener and skillful communicator is essential.
    7. History of working hard, working smart, and not settling for status quo work is expected.
    8. Collaborative partner with a customer-service approach with people is a must.
    9. Having a good sense of humor, enjoying the journey, and generating a spirit of fun along the way is foundational to the long-term success with this team.
    10. Servant leader by example, caring about and serving the people you work with and those you work for – a given.


    Physical Requirements 

    Ability to read, write, hear, speak, see and communicate effectively. Ability to operate basic office equipment to include, photocopier, fax machine, adding machine, computer equipment, and the like. Position is largely sedentary. Occasional lifting of office supplies, etc. is necessary.


    Personal Characteristics 

    The Creative Director interacts with the entire Hillsdale College audience. A neat appearance and a pleasant relationship that is supportive of the College mission is essential. This relationship needs to be supportive and professional, while maintaining confidentiality as needed.
