  • Overview

     The BCSI Publishing Project Manager and Editor position requires someone with excellent verbal and organizational abilities.  Further, it requires the entrepreneurial skill to solve problems and take a product from concept to reality through collaboration and good planning abilities.

    Responsibilities

    1. Manage the curriculum publishing projects undertaken by BCSI. Create and maintain project schedules; assign tasks to and track progress of publishing project team members such as authors, content editors, copy editors, and graphic designers; coordinate project progress with other offices in Hillsdale College such as finance, copy center, shipping, and external organizations such as the printer and the schools.
    2. Recruit freelance editors, designers, etc. as needed to complete work on projects and assess their ability to accomplish the work required.
    3. Collaborate with members of the BCSI Curriculum and Instruction team to identify needs in current curriculum resources as compared to the BCSI Program Guide. This identification activity may include searching for and evaluating existing books and other resources to fill curriculum needs and working with classroom teachers to determine what types of resources will best fit the needs of teachers.
    4. Serve as the final editor (proofreading, copyediting, or content editing) as determined by the Publishing Project Manager where appropriate and necessary to ensure product quality.

    Education and Experience

    This position requires a Bachelor’s degree and three years’ experience managing editorial; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the job.  Knowledge of contracting procedures with freelancers in publishing is a plus.

    Personal Characteristics

    The Publishing Project Manager and Editor interacts with College staff and the entire Hillsdale audience. A neat appearance and a pleasant relationship that is supportive of the College mission is essential. This relationship needs to be pleasant, supportive and professional, while maintaining confidentiality as needed. Additionally, all BCSI personnel must have good communication skills in order to effectively discuss Hillsdale College and the Barney Charter School Initiative to individuals across the country.  Candidates must have an understanding of the mission of Hillsdale College and its philosophy, as well as educational practices and philosophies of the Initiative.
